Start with the people at the table

Player count is only the beginning. Think about reading confidence, how long someone is comfortable waiting, and whether the group enjoys direct competition. A game that works well for adults may need a practice round when younger players join.

Read the box, then the rulebook

Check the publisher’s stated age range, player count and play time. Allow extra time for teaching and setup. Small components need particular care around young children; follow the product’s safety guidance.
